SOFTBALL BLANKS DELAWARE AND LAFAYETTE ON SATURDAY

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Radford softball team pitched two shutouts on Saturday in a 2-0 win over Delaware and an 8-0 victory over Lafayette in five innings at the George Mason Softball Complex.

Freshmen Riley Oakes and Cam Andersen had stellar outings in the circle and only allowed a combined six hits in the two games. Oakes tossed a five-hit shutout against Delaware (12-5), while Andersen threw a one-hit bid against Lafayette (0-3).

GAME ONE
Oakes (2-1) shut down a high-powered offense in the Blue Hens and struck out nine batters in the process. She gave up just three hits through the first five innings and then allowed a hit in each of the final two frames.

Only two players got into scoring position for Delaware until the final frame, where the Blue Hens had more than one player on the base paths for the first time all game. Oakes was able to get two line outs to end the game and pitch her third complete game.

She was able to get some early help from fellow freshman Madison Canady, who drove in Destiny Freeman from first for the first run of the game. Freeman later drove in the game's second run as Oakes scored on her groundout. Oakes led off the inning with an infield single then moved to third on an error.

The two runs were all the offense the Highlanders needed. Radford did tally nine hits in the game led by Abby Wilson's first career multi-hit game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
All of Radford's nine hits were singles. Eight of the nine players in the lineup tallied hits. Sofia Tapia and Talia Douglas drew a walk each. Radford left six on base, while Delaware left seven aboard.

GAME TWO
The offensive fireworks were in full force in game two of the day and they came early. Radford scored seven runs in the first two innings. Talia Douglas stole the show in the batter's box, while Andersen stole it on the rubber.

Douglas notched four RBIs with a 2-for-4 day and a pair of runs scored. Both her hits were extra base hits in a double and a home run. Andersen (2-0) only allowed one hit in five innings of work.

Radford had three consecutive doubles to begin the game from Sydney Fisher, Oakes and Douglas. The junior's double plated the first two batters and she came around to score on a double steal. Radford had a 3-0 lead at the end of the frame.

The Highlanders took a 7-0 lead after the second inning thanks to an RBI single by Fisher, an RBI double by Oakes and a two-run blast by Douglas. Oakes' double was her second of the game and the only two of her career.

Andersen made it an 8-0 game with a solo shot in the top of the third, which put the eight-run rule in effect. It was the freshman's second home run of the season. She later returned to the circle and gave up her first hit of the game, but then retired the final seven batters to close out the game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
A trio of Highlanders tallied multi-hit games and they were all the top three hitters in the batting order. The three also scored six of the eight runs and drove in six of the seven as well. Oakes led the way with a three-hit day.

STAT OF THE DAY
After recording nine singles in game one, the Highlanders tallied six extra-base hits in game two. Radford also had nine hits in game two as well to total 18 for the day.

QUOTABLE
"I couldn't be more pleased with the team's performance today," coach Creasy stated. "Yesterday and today we have seen a different team dynamic. Things have started coming together, they're all playing more confident and aggressive and it's paying off. Each individual has stepped up and contributed to this weekend's successes. We need to continue to stick to the game plan tomorrow and come out ready to play. We have lots of growth left but we're trusting the process."

UP NEXT
Radford will conclude the Patriot Classic with a doubleheader beginning at 9 a.m., with Lafayette followed by a 11:15 matchup against the host George Mason.
