MARVIN’S NO-HITTER HIGHLIGHTS PERFECT DAY AT PATRIOT CLASSIC

FAIRFAX, Va. – Jessie Marvin gave the Radford softball team its first no-hitter since 2010 in the 14-0 win over George Mason, which followed an 8-7 walk-off victory over Lafayette for the first game on Sunday, the final day of the Patriot Classic.

Radford (11-3) pushed its win streak to six games with the pair of victories today. The Highlanders put up 22 runs on 25 hits through the pair of games. Hunter Mundy highlighted the day at the plate with seven RBIs – six against George Mason (3-10). Autumn Slemaker had a multi-hit game with three triples against Lafayette (0-4)

GAME ONE
After putting up eight runs on the Leopards on Saturday, the Highlanders added another eight on Sunday. However, it didn't come without some late heroics.

Radford was down 7-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning and needed a run or more to extend the game, or win it. Slemaker gave Radford the run it needed with her second triple of the day. She plated Cam Andersen for the game-tying run. Slemaker later scored the game-winning run on a Riley Oakes single to left field. All of the runs were scored with one-out in the inning.

The game was a back-and-forth affair as there were three lead changes. Lafayette jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning but Radford got a run back with a bases loaded walk in the bottom half of the frame.

After the Leopards took a 4-1 edge, a trio of freshmen scratched off four runs and gave Radford a 5-4 lead highlight by a pair of RBIs in the second inning by Slemaker and Andersen. Then, Madison Canady drove in Destiny Freeman and Hunter Mundy in the third inning giving the Highlanders its first lead of the morning.

The Leopards scored three runs in the fifth and regained the lead, 7-5. Radford cut it to a one-run game thanks to a Sydney Fisher single up the middle that scored Canady. That set up the Highlander comeback in the seventh.

Radford had four pitchers in the circle but Marvin (5-1) was credited with the win pitching 2.0 innings of one-hit ball. That was a precursor to what she would do in the circle for game two of the day.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Slemaker tallied a pair of triples in game, which hasn't happened at Radford since 1995 when Suzie Rath tallied two against Charleston Southern. Freeman and Canady, along with Slemaker had the only multi-hit games. Canady scored two of the eight runs. The Highlanders drew nine walks and three of them came from Fisher. The junior also stole a pair of bases.

GAME TWO
The offense powered 14 runs on 16 hits in the second game of the day, however Marvin stole the show in the circle giving Radford its first no-hit bid in a decade. The junior also gave Radford its first-ever five-inning no-hitter.

The day didn't appear to start off well for Marvin as she walked the very first batter of the game and then had the second batter reach on a fielder's choice. She closed out the first inning with a fly out and a groundout.

Marvin (6-1) retired the final 12 batters she faced. She faced 16 batters total and didn't acquire a single strikeout. While Marvin was in the dugout, the Highlander offense was in full swing scoring six runs through the first two innings.

Mundy and Sofia Tapia drove in a pair of runs with doubles in the first inning, then Mundy drove in two more with a  two-run home run in the second. She had four RBIs and was a triple and single away from the cycle in her first two plate appearances.

The eight-run rule went into effect in the fourth inning as Freeman extended the lead to 7-0 with an RBI single. Two at-bats later Canady made it 9-0 with the Highlanders' second home run of the day.

Radford made sure to keep an eight-run cushion no matter what happened as the Highlanders pushed across five runs on six hits in the fifth inning. The Highlanders took advantage of three Patriot errors in the inning and headed to the bottom half of the frame with a commanding 14-run lead.

Marvin came out and sealed the victory – her fifth of the season – and completed the illustrious no-hitter for the first time in her career.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Offensively, Mundy tallied two doubles, a home run and drove in six of the 13 runs. The six RBIs marked a career-high and tied a single-game record at Radford. The last six-RBI game came in 2016 and only six players have accomplished that feat. Destiny Freeman had a 4-for-4 day at the dish with two RBIs and three runs scored. Five different Highlanders had multi-hit games and Radford tallied four doubles, one triple and two home runs. Talia Douglas went 2-for-2 with four runs scored, also tying a single-game record.

UP NEXT
Radford will hit the road once more for a Wednesday doubleheader against North Carolina Central in Durham, N.C. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
