HIGHLANDERS COMPLETE SEASON-OPENING SWEEP OF N.C. CENTRAL

DURHAM, N.C. – Radford scored four runs in the final four innings, and pitchers Austin Gerber and Bruce Hudson worked four scoreless innings in relief to lead the Highlanders to a series sweep of North Carolina Central on Sunday afternoon, 9-5, at Durham Athletic Park.

Radford wasted no time in opening the scoring, plating three runs in the first inning. Each of the Highlanders' first four hitters reached base, with J.D. Mundy hitting a two-run double for the first runs. Anthony Galati hit an RBI single for the third run of the inning.

The Highlanders added a run in each of the next two innings to increase the lead to 5-0. Will Harless reached on a fielder's choice in the second inning which scored Garrett Matheny, and Sean Cheely hit an RBI single down the left-field line for his first hit as a Highlander in the third.

N.C. Central added a run in the third and four runs in the fifth to tie the score before the Highlanders' late-inning surge.

Radford added the go-ahead run in the sixth, when Colyb Higgerson scored after an errant throw into left field allowed the Highlander shortstop to score from second. Harless added a two-run homer, his second home run of the series, in the eighth, and Podaras hit an RBI double, his fifth double of the series, in the ninth.

Gerber pitched two scoreless innings to earn the win, while Hudson added two scoreless frames for his second save in as many days. Ryan Bywaters started the game and went four innings, allowing just one run while striking out a career-high six batters.
