2/25/2020 9:22:00 PM | Baseball
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Radford's pitching staff held Virginia Tech scoreless in all but one inning, but the Hokies scored three in the seventh inning to defeat the Highlanders on Tuesday, 3-2, at English Field at Atlantic Union Bank Park.
Â
The Highlanders took a lead in the game in the fourth inning, when J.D. Mundy doubled to center field, scoring Straton Podaras all the way from first.
Â
Radford's combination of Ryan Bywaters, Hunter Williams and Andrew Boyd shut down Virginia Tech through the first six innings, combining to allow just four hits – all singles. Williams struck out a pair, while Bywaters also added a strikeout.
Â
Virginia Tech finally got to the Highlander bullpen in the seventh inning, scoring three runs in off pitcher Derek Domecq. Austin Gerber came in and closed out the inning, but the Hokies had the run support they needed.
Â
Anthony Galati singled home Garrett Matheny, who hit a one-out triple, in the eighth and Gerber and Bruce Hudson combined to pitch a scoreless bottom half of the inning, but Virginia Tech retired the Highlanders in order in the ninth to close out the game.
Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Galati's eighth-inning single extended his on-base streak to a team-high eight games. Mundy went 1-for-3 with the aforementioned RBI double against his former school. Each of Radford's first five hitters (Matheny, Galati, Podaras, Mundy and Will Harless) recorded a hit.
