RADFORD RACES PAST RED FLASH IN SEASON OPENER

LORETTO, Pa. – An early offensive onslaught set the tone on Saturday afternoon, as the Radford women's lacrosse team scored the first four goals of its season opener en route to a 15-8 win over the St. Francis (Pa.) Red Flash at DeGol Field.

Lindsey Carroll and Grace Gleason led the Highlanders (1-0) with four goals apiece, with Amanda Paino adding three for Radford. Grace Gleason and Katie Bendrick had three ground balls each and Maddie Bowman made nine saves in net.

Paino and Carroll opened the scoring for the Highlanders, with Paino scoring less than six minutes into the contest and Carroll adding Radford's second goal just 91 seconds after the opener, forcing the Red Flash to call an early timeout. Brittany Rinaldi and Grace Gleason extended the Highlanders lead to 4-0 less than 11 minutes into the contest.

After St. Francis scored their first goal to cut the Highlanders' lead to three, Radford upped the offensive intensity, with five straight goals. Jennifer Shield tallied her first of the contest midway through the first half, then Gleason and Carroll scored 33 seconds apart to make it 7-1 with 9:43 left in the opening frame. The back-to-back quick strike goals forced St. Francis (Pa.) to burn its final timeout of the game.

The Highlanders scored two more goals in the first half following the timeout, as Grace Gleason completed her first-half hat trick with 8:05 left in the period and Anna Ogan followed that with her first of the season minutes later. The Red Flash scored a pair of goals late in the half, but the Highlanders took a six-goal advantage, 9-3, into the break.

St. Francis (Pa.) scored a third straight goal early in the second half, but the Highlanders responded with three straight goals, as Paino scored twice to complete her hat trick and Gleason added her fourth to push the lead back to eight, 12-4, just past the midway point of the half. The Red Flash cut Radford's lead to five on two separate occasions, 12-7 and 13-8, but Carroll scored twice in the final 7:07 of the match, including the final goal with 18 seconds left, and Shield added her second tally inside the final minute to secure the season-opening road win for the Highlanders.

STAT OF THE GAME
Radford begins the season 1-0 for the third consecutive year and has won three straight over St. Francis (Pa.). The Highlanders out-shot the Red Flash, 38-19, including a 28-17 advantage in shots on goal.
