SIX-RUN SEVENTH LEADS HIGHLANDERS PAST CANISIUS IN SERIES OPENER

RADFORD, Va. – Radford tied its season high for runs in a game on Friday afternoon, pushing 14 across the plate in a 14-6 win over Canisius at Williams Field at Carter Memorial Stadium.

The Highlanders (6-7) found themselves in an early hole after the Golden Griffins (3-9-1) struck for three runs in the first. Radford responded with four in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by an Austin Kaplan two-run double.

After Canisius tied the game in the top of the second, the Highlanders re-took the lead for good on a Straton Podaras RBI single in the bottom of the second. Radford pushed its lead to 8-4 in the third inning on a two-run homer by Kaplan and a Colby Higgerson RBI single.

The Golden Griffins added a pair of runs in the middle innings to cut Radford's lead to 8-6, but the Highlanders exploded for six runs in the seventh inning to break the game open, with a Garrett Matheny two-run triple and a J.D. Mundy three-run homer accounting for most of the damage.

Austin Gerber allowed just one hit in 2 2/3 innings of relief for his second win of the season. Canisius starting pitcher Kyle Warner was tagged with the loss after allowing eight runs (all earned) in three innings.

Gerber and Derek Domecq combined to allow just two hits and no runs in 4 2/3 innings out of the bullpen.
