Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Stout Second Half Helps Radford Defeat Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Thanks to a 22-5 run through the first seven minutes of the second half, the Radford men's basketball team downed Charleston Southern, 68-48, on Sunday afternoon to complete the season sweep.

Radford (8-6, 7-1 Big South) had a four-point lead at halftime, despite holding Charleston Southern to 20 points – the lowest a team has scored against the Highlanders through the first 14 games of the season.

However, the Highlanders first half shooting percentage of 37.5 changed really quick in the second half. Dravon Mangum drained a 3-pointer just 26 seconds into the second half pushing it to a seven-point Radford advantage, 27-20. That ignited a 22-5 run and gave Radford a 46-25 lead, its largest of the game at the time.

The Highlanders went 8-for-11 from the floor, including 2-for-3 from long range during the substantial run. Radford had seven different scorers over the seven-minute spurt. Mangum had six of the 22 points, which was the most during that stretch. He ended the game with 16 points, one shy of tying his career-high.

Along with the increase in field goal percentage for Radford, the team increased its 3-point percentage from 10.0 percent in the first half to 55.6 percent in the second. Mangum had three of Radford's six total 3-pointers.

Radford pushed on and eventually took a 28-point lead with 5:15 remaining in the contest. The Highlanders shot 61.5 percent from the field in the second half. However, the defense was lights out in the second half as well.

Charleston Southern was only able to convert 7-of-23 field goals in the second half, which is just 30.4 percent. The Buccaneers only converted 16 field goals for the entire game, which is the lowest amount Radford has held a team too all season long. CSU finished the game with a 30.8 field goal percentage – the lowest from a Division I opponent Radford has faced all year.

The scoring was slow for both teams in the first half. Neither team got on the board until the 16:33 mark of the opening half, thanks to a Fah'Mir Ali layup. CSU tied the game at four three minutes later, but a 9-0 run gave Radford a heft 13-4 lead with just under 10 minutes to play.

Despite Radford maintaining the lead for a majority of the first half, Phlandrous Fleming took over the final four minutes of the half and helped CSU to cut the deficit to three. That changed when Lewis Djonkam hit a free throw to push the lead to four before the break. Fleming was held to just seven points in the first half and finished the game with 18, leading all players.

Stat of the Game
Both teams were about even in the turnover column – Charleston Southern had 17 compared to Radford's 16 – but the Highlanders scored 24 points off those turnovers and Charleston Southern only scored 11.
