Radford Outlasts Campbell in Triple Overtime Thriller

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – It took three overtimes, but Radford erased a 16-point deficit and outlasted Campbell, 97-91, on Tuesday night inside Gore Arena in Buies Creek, N.C.

Radford (9-6, 8-1 Big South) used a 9-0 run in the third overtime to take its largest advantage of the night, a 92-85 lead with 1:42 to play. Campbell (8-8, 4-5 Big South) made it a 3-point game twice in the final minute but clutch free throw shooting by Radford – including a one-foot free throw by Bryan Hart – secured the fifth straight Highlander victory.

All seemed to be lost for Radford when Campbell took a 47-31 lead with 16:12 left in the second half. However, Radford has outscored its opponents by 50 in the second half and that trend continued on Tuesday.

The Highlanders kept chipping away at the lead and Shaquan Jules' nine straight points cut the Campbell lead to less than 10 – 61-52 – with 6:40 to play. Radford held the Camels to just five points over the final 7:16 and used a 19-5 run to force overtime. Fah'Mir Ali only had two points in the game until he hit a clutch 3-pointer with 24 seconds to force the first OT at 66 all.

He later hit another clutch 3-pointer with 37 seconds left to force the third and final overtime. The first overtime was the Josiah Jeffers show as he had seven of Radford's 11 points. He had a chance to be the hero and make it a 10-point overtime personal performance but rimmed out the final 3-pointer as time expired. That sent the game to a second overtime tied at 77.

The two teams only scored six points apiece in the second overtime and Ali had a good look to one-up his game-tying 3-pointer with a game-winning 3-pointer, but came up just short as the game was sent into a third and final overtime.

The stout Radford defense didn't get off to a hot start as Campbell shot 61.5 percent (8-for-13) from long range in the first half. The strong shooting percentage combined with Radford's 12 first-half turnovers led to an 11-point halftime lead for Campbell.

Radford finished the game with a 53.6 field goal percentage and had seven players in double-figure scoring, led by Dravon Mangum's 16. Campbell's Jordan Whitfield led all players with 28 points.

Stat of the Game
It's the first time the Highlanders have played in multiple overtimes since Dec. 12, 2015 in a 92-91 victory.

Inside the Box Score
Radford had 12 players see the floor due to three players fouling out. One of those players was Chyree Walker, who had 10 points and 13 rebounds for his team-leading third double-double of the season. Lewis Djonkam was one rebound shy of a double-double but scored in double-digits for the seventh time this season. Ali was one assist away from his first career double-double. However, the nine assists tie a career-best. Hart led all players with six made free throws going 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. Radford was 3-for-3 from the floor in the third overtime, including one 3-pointer.

Tweet of the Game

Quotable
"It was a lot of toughness that we showed tonight." Mike Jones said. "Everybody that came in the game contributed and stepped up in a big way. We just stayed the course. We didn't start how we wanted defensively in the first half. We played really solid the rest of the way and that was what was able to get us back in the game."

Up Next
The two teams will do it all over again as Radford looks to earn its fourth sweep of the season on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
