CLINTON, S.C. – The Radford Men's Soccer team picked up a crucial conference victory, 2-1, over Presbyterian on Wednesday night as goals from
Juan Benavides and
Dondre' Robinson spurred a second half comeback despite playing down a man.
"This was a huge comeback win for us tonight," said Head Coach
Chris Barrett. "Again, we showed the Highlander spirit, character, and heart needed to win tough games on the road and in the face of adversity. Our upperclassmen stepped up to the challenge and led this team. We need to carry this momentum into Saturday's game against a very good High Point team at home."
The Blue Hose struck first, scoring in the 17
th minute on a right-footed effort from Mamadu Bah. The Highlanders consistently pushed high up the field, putting pressure on the hosts, but the score remained 1-0 at halftime.
Despite the deficit, Radford's offense was clicking in a way it has struggled to replicate most of the season. The Highlanders posted seven shots on goal in the first half alone, matching their second-best output for a full game in 2021.
That offensive pressure finally produced results in the 62
nd minute when a Highlander was chopped down in the box and a penalty was awarded. Benavides stepped up and calmy hit his target after sending the keeper the wrong way.
The celebrating ended quickly when less than a minute later,
Tony Martinez was shown a second yellow card and sent off with a red. The Highlanders would play down a man for the rest of the game. The gloom and doom didn't last long.
Mere moments later in the 65
th minute, Benavides came through in the clutch again, threading a pass through multiple defenders and into the path of
Patrick Siczek. Siczek then laid it off to Robinson who chipped the keeper and put Radford ahead for the first time in the match.
Radford's defense held strong for the final 25 minutes, preventing any truly dangerous opportunities for the Blue Hose, and secured the win.
