SERIES HISTORY
The Highlanders and Cavaliers have gone head-to-head six times, with Virginia holding a 6-0 advantage in the all-time series. The first ever meeting took place on Jan. 6, 1988 when UVA bested Radford, 65-56, and the most recent one was on Dec. 7, 2010. In that showdown, the Cavaliers took a 54-44 victory in John Paul Jones Arena despite being held to a 27.7 shooting percentage.
SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS
The 2019 National Champion Virginia Cavaliers have established themselves as one of the most consistently successful programs year-in and year-out, thanks in large part to head coach Tony Bennett. The Cavs have reached the NCAA Tournament in each of the last eight years, omitting the 2019-20 Big Dance that was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Expectations were just as high heading into the 2021-22 campaign, with the ACC preseason poll pegging UVA to finish fourth. They also received nine first-place votes, one of six teams to collect at least one.
The season didn't start off quite as expected, however, as UVA dropped a 66-58 decision to Navy in its home opener. Heading into their matchup with the Highlanders, the Cavs now find themselves in unfamiliar territory considering they had not begun a season 0-1 since 2012-13. Preseason All-ACC Second Team selection Kihei Clark and company will be locked in on Friday as they look to get back on track.
LAST TIME OUT
Hot shooting from start to finish carried Radford to an 84-72 victory over Emory & Henry on Tuesday night, giving Darris Nichols his first career win as a head coach.
The Highlanders have now started the season with a win four out of the last five years and improved their record inside the Dedmon Center to 88-36 over the last nine years.
Sophomore Camron McNeil proved to be a major catalyst against the Wasps, leading the hosts with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers. Junior forward Rashun Williams and redshirt junior forward Dravon Mangum each added 13 points, going a combined 10-for-17 from the field and 6-for-11 from beyond the arc.
Backcourt duo Josiah Jeffers (11pts) and Bryan Hart (10pts) also reached double-figures in scoring, with Hart scoring the very first points of the season. The Hampton, Va. product knocked down a corner three just 16 seconds into the game.
HIGH-POWERED OFFENSE
Darris Nichols let it be known that his Highlander teams would bring a fast-paced and dynamic offense to the table and so far, they've done just that. If you include the preseason exhibition, Radford is averaging 83.5 points per game. For comparison the program record for points per game in a season is 82.9 during the 1978-79 campaign.
POWER FIVE SUCCESS
The Highlanders have enjoyed a decent amount of success against opponents from the Power 5 conferences over the last decade, defeating six of them. Most recently, Radford went to Northwestern and topped the Wildcats, 67-56, on Nov. 19, 2019. Radford also has one ranked win on the ledger thanks to a 62-59 victory over No. 17 Texas on Nov. 30, 2018.
