RADFORD, Va. – Six different players scored in double-figures as the Radford men's basketball team notched a season high in points and knocked off a quality Eastern Kentucky squad, 88-75, at Carilion Clinic Court in the Dedmon Center on Sunday evening.
The Highlanders (3-4, 0-0 Big South) improve to 3-0 on their home court thanks to a team-high 15 points from
Bryan Hart and a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double from
Rashun Williams. Cam'ron McNeil (13),
Josiah Jeffers (11),
Artese Stapleton (10) and
Tai'Reon Joseph (10) all made major contributions on the score sheet as well.
Stapleton stood out all game, guiding Radford through a full court press that lasted for all 40 minutes, limiting the team's turnovers. He also tallied four assists, matching Joseph's four assists to lead all players and help the Highlanders reach 17 as a team on 29 made field goals.
Radford shot 54.7% from the field and 47.4% from three-point range, both season-bests. At the same time, Eastern Kentucky (5-3, 0-0 ASUN) was held to just 34.4%. Their 75 points mean the Highlanders have held opponents below their season average in five consecutive games.
For the third time in four games, Joseph got the scoring started. The Highlanders came out with an intensity right from the jump, building their lead to 12-3 before the first media timeout even hit.
Radford refused to take its foot off the gas, pushing its lead to 34-19 with 2:41 to go before halftime. The Colonels managed to cut their deficit to eight at the break, but momentum was still on the side of the home team.
The second half didn't stick to the script quite as much, as fouls and free throws piled up, allowing EKU to tie the game at 50-all. The Highlanders answered quickly with a 7-0 run to regain the lead, and fended off any other comeback attempts for the rest of the night.
Clutch factor came into play late and Radford showed this year's team has it in spades as McNeil, Jeffers, Hart, and Stapleton combined to knock down all 10 of their free throw attempts in the final minute.
