Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Strong Second Half Not Enough Against Charleston

CONWAY, S.C. – The Radford Women's Basketball program fell 59-77 to College of Charleston Saturday night in their first game at the Coastal Carolina Christmas Classic. Bridget Birkhead had her best scoring performance of the season so far totaling 18 while also grabbing five rebounds.

Charleston brought the intensity early and jumped out to a 27-11 lead by the end of the first quarter. Jackie Christ and Rachel LaLonde scored the Highlanders' first baskets early on to try and break into the early deficit, but Anika McGarity punched back with four three-pointers that helped Charleston extend their lead.

The Highlanders collected themselves and played better in the second quarter, being outscored just 13-11. Birkhead got hot as the quarter went on scoring eight points in total but finished exceptionally strong with back-to-back three-pointers. Charleston would lead headed into the second half 40-22.

Radford played much better in the third and fourth quarters of the game as the two squads actually tied each other in their second half point totals with 37 each. Vanessa Blake played a large role in that turnaround as she was a force on the offensive boards. Blake picked up four offensive rebounds throughout the game while scoring her second-highest point total of the season with eight.

Radford shot an incredible 70% in the fourth quarter as the Highlanders saw a team effort with six different players scoring. Danielle Montelbano opened the scoring in the fourth with a driving layup through some tough defense. Birkhead scored a quick five-straight points as well which forced Charleston to call a timeout. The two teams traded punches until the final seconds as Charleston came out with the 77-59 win.

The Highlanders won the bench battle once again tonight, outscoring Charleston 27-9. The Highlanders also scored 11 second chance points to Charleston's 14. Overall for Radford, five different players recorded five or more rebounds as Birkhead was the only Highlander to record double-digit points with 18.
