Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

LaLonde’s Double-Double Not Enough at American

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Radford Women's Basketball program got off to a hot start in their game against American Sunday night but came up short in a 58-68 final score. Two Highlanders recorded career highs in points while Rachel LaLonde highlighted the box score with the team's first double-double of the season.

The Highlanders sprinted out of the gates to take a commanding 11-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Jackie Christ and Destinee Marshall accounted for all 11 of those points which kick started their career days in scoring. The 11-0 run forced an American timeout and the Eagles came out of it looking better and went on a 5-1 run to keep things close.

Radford would get baskets from Vanessa Blake and Kyanna Morgan to keep the offense running. At the end of the first quarter the Highlanders looked good with an 18-11 lead.

American responded, though, in the second quarter going on a 10-0 run imitating the Highlanders' start to the first quarter. Ashley Tudor broke the run with a layup and Bridget Birkhead would nail a three-pointer to tie the game back up at 23-all. LaLonde gave the Highlanders a 25-23 lead, but another 9-0 run by the Eagles gave them a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way.

Coming out of halftime with a 27-32 deficit, the Highlanders looked to respond. Bryonna McClean was that response for the Highlanders as she tends to be putting Radford on the board first with a nice floating jump shot to start the second half. American responded in the paint combating the Highlanders' attack, however, and would outlast Radford through the third quarter.

Radford trailed by just 10 entering the fourth quarter and would get the deficit back to as close as six with four minutes remaining in the game. The Highlanders would only get one basket from Birkhead in those final four minutes as American held on to win 68-58.

LaLonde continued her strong play as of late with the team's first double-double as she scored 10 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Christ scored a career-best 10 points while Marshall also scored a career-best 13 points. The freshman Blake was aggressive recording five offensive rebounds, another season best.
