Late Rally Not Enough in Series Opening Match Versus Buccaneers

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford (2-1, 2-1 BSC) women's volleyball team fell to Charleston Southern (3-0, 3-0 BSC) in three sets in a Saturday night tilt inside the Dedmon Center.

Set One
The Buccaneers got out to a hot start in the opening stanza and strung together a 7-0 run before Samantha Reitz sent a strike into the opposing side of the court. Charleston Southern reached the plateau of 20 points to Radford's 10 early on. Morgan Lawson's kill rounded out the set for the Highlanders as a Bucs booming kill sealed the set at 25-14.

Set Two
Radford came out swinging in the following set, thanks to back-to-back service aces from Breanna Ankrum and a block assist from Jordan Coomes and Samantha Reitz. With a Reitz kill, the Highlanders had positioned themselves ahead of the visitors at 4-1. The teams proceeded to go point-for-point down the stretch, prior to the Bucs tying the set at 12 all. Charleston Southern tacked on seven more points before Radford was able to respond. A service error gave the Highlanders the momentum they needed to turn the tide. Several service aces from Emma Young, a kill from Reitz, and a block assist from Reitz and Taylor O'Neal put the home team within one at 19-18.

O'Neal and Laila Wallace posted kills to conclude the scoring for Radford. The Bucs strung together a series of points to take the set by a narrow margin of 25-20.

Set Three
Hailey Flowers brought the early and premature lead with her signature strike at 2-1. With her team in a hole early, the Highlanders battled back into contention tying the game on a Buccaneers attack error.

These Big South Conference foes traded points throughout the set, staying within a point or two of one another. At 19 all, Charleston Southern notched a kill to take the lead but Lawson quickly responded for her team to deadlock the set at 20 all. The Highlanders were able to garner kills from Reitz, Lawson, and Daria Burrows to take the lead at 23-20.

However, Charleston Southern logged the final five points to not only tie but take the set at 25-23. Ultimately taking the match in a three-set sweep.

Team Leaders
Flowers and Lawson paced the offense with eight kills each, a season and career high for Lawson. Young's three aces are her new career and season high in that category. Reitz also tabbed a season-high in blocks at four. Erin Hetherington set herself a new career high in assists at 16. Grace Green's 14 digs on the night lead the Highlanders' defensive effort.
