Radford Falls to Richmond In Season Opener

RICHMOND, Va. – The Radford (0-1) women's lacrosse team commenced the 2021 season against Richmond (1-0), falling to the Spiders 19-10 on Sunday evening. The Highlanders were led by an offensive explosion from captain Jen Shield, with a total of five scoring goals in the match. 
 
Richmond took an early 2-0 lead over Radford but Jen Shield's man-up goal broke that scoring drought, bringing the margin to one. Another several goals for the Spiders set the tone for their offensive output, however Shield responded yet again for her team. Coming up with her second goal of the match, putting the contest at 5-2 in favor of the home team. Four more goals for Richmond pushed their lead to 9-2 over Radford. Shield's hat trick came at the seventh minute, propelling her team to a margin of six. Richmond tacked on a pair of additional goals to bring the halftime score to 11-3, in favor of the Spiders. 
 
Wasting no time, Radford's clear attempt was good and led to a goal from Margaret Gleason with only a few ticks off the clock. A defensive bout ensued and minutes fell off the clock before either team was able to score. At around the 22nd minute, M. Gleason's second goal found its way to the back of the net. Richmond found a way to break the visiting team's momentum.
 
For her first career goal as a Highlander, Jessica Diorio beamed her offering past the Spiders' keeper. From then on, the momentum, leaned in favor of Radford as Grace Gleason joined her sister and teammates in the scoring column. Richmond was able to notch a pair of goals to increase their lead 14-7. Diorio struck yet again later on in the period on a free-position goal, for her second of the season. The Spiders mounted a five-goal rally but was broken up by Lindsey Carroll's pair of goals, coming on a free-position attempts. 
 
Richmond was led by Madison Ostrick with four goals on the evening with Megan Gianforte receiving the win. 
 
Maddie Bowman logged the minutes in goal for Radford and tallied six saves in the contest.
