Radford Drops Season Opener to Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Radford opened its 37th season of Division I play Wednesday evening, but it was Liberty who took home a 4-0 win over the Highlanders at Osborne Stadium.

The game marked the head coaching debut of Chris Barrett, who also handed debuts to six different Highlanders. Sophomores Toby Squire, Jayden Gonsalves and Ryan Machado-Jones all earned starts in their first career appearances, while freshmen Mustaph Kamara, Solomon Clark and Anthony Giannecchini each came off the bench to make their debut for the Red and White.

Liberty had each of the first three shots of the game and opened the scoring in the seventh minute on Musa Morris' third goal of the year. Radford started to find its footing after that, with Baye Djibril Faye forcing a save from Flames goalkeeper Danny Cordero just moments after the opening tally. Pape Oumar Gueye also fired a shot on target midway through the half that Cordero saved.

The Flames added on to their lead with a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes of the opening half, as Brayden Borutskie scored in the 32nd minute and Michael Huss added one for Liberty in the 43rd minute. Liberty then added a fourth goal in the 48th minute, with Morris scoring for the second time in the game.

Radford had its chances early in the second half with four shots in an eight-minute span after the fourth Liberty goal, but none were able to find the back of the net. Liberty was reduced to 10 men after a second yellow card was shown to the Flames' Arnold Onyango for a dangerous tackle, but the home side continued to put pressure on the Highlanders despite being a man down.

Joseba Incera made three saves for Radford, including a sprawling save to deny a goal at his near-side post, but in the end the Highlanders were unable to beat Cordero with any shots, sealing a 4-0 defeat in a chippy game that featured eight bookings between the two teams.

Incera, Gueye, Patrick Siczek, Max-Emilios Angelides and Faye each played the full 90 minutes for Radford.
