Late Goals Lead USC Upstate Past Radford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate's Pol Monells scored a pair of goals in a two-minute span Sunday afternoon to lead the Spartans past visiting Radford, 2-1, at County University Soccer Stadium.

Radford took each of the first two shots on target, but Baye Djibril Faye and Kameron Bell-Cooper's shots were both saved by Spartan goalkeeper Felipe Baeza. The Highlanders struck first in the 22nd minute when Pape Oumar Gueye beat Baeza with a shot from just inside the 18-yard box for Radford's first goal of the season.

Upstate had a pair of shots on target in the final 10 minutes of the opening half, but Joseba Incera stopped both of them. Both teams had six shots in the opening 45 minutes, but Radford had five on target compared to just three for Upstate.

The Spartans put plenty of pressure on Radford with six shots in the first 35 minutes of the second half, but failed to hit the target. Upstate finally broke through in the 82nd minute when Monells beat Incera with a shot from the right side of the field, outside the box. Monells gave the Spartans the lead with his second in a two-minute span from a nearly identical angle.

Radford was unable to fire a shot in the final 10 minutes of the game, as the home side held on for a 2-1 win.

Incera made two saves in the loss for Radford, while Faye and Bell-Cooper had two shotes apiece to lead the Highlanders.
