Radford Defeats Gardner-Webb, Barrett Earns First Career Victory

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Ryan Machado-Jones scored the match winner with Radford's only shot of the game Sunday, as the Highlanders defeated Gardner-Webb on the road, 1-0, at Greene-Harbison Stadium.

The goal was the first in Machado-Jones' career and also gave interim head coach Chris Barrett his first career win in charge of the program.

Gardner-Webb took the first two shots of the game, including one inside the first 10 minutes that was saved by Highlander goalkeeper Joseba Incera.

Machado-Jones then wasted no time in making his presence felt, scoring in the 33rd minute to give Radford the lead after coming on as a substitute less than two minutes earlier. Radford held the Runnin' Bulldogs without a shot in the final 20 minutes of the half to take a 1-0 lead into the break.

Radford continued its defensive pressure in the second half, limiting Gardner-Webb to two shots in the half and four for the game. Incera made his second save of the match in the 58th minute, as the Highlander backline continued to prevent Gardner-Webb from creating serious chances.

The Runnin' Bulldogs had one final chance in the last minute of play, but Kharrel Medza's shot sailed high. Radford was able to run out the clock and preserve the shutout win.

Incera had two saves for the Highlanders to record his first win of the season and his first clean sheet of the campaign. The four shots allowed by Radford was the fewest in a game since a 2-1 win over Howard during the 2019 season.

Machado-Jones' game-winning goal was Radford's only shot, on or off target, in the entire match.
