Radford Drops Two in Winthrop Kickoff Classic

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Radford softball team fell to Bowling Green, 1-0, and Stony Brook, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon in a couple of low-scoring affairs to end the Winthrop Kickoff Tournament in Rock Hill, S.C.

Game 1 • Bowling Green 1, Radford 0
Jessie Marvin had arguably one of her best outings of the season pitching seven innings with four hits and one run allowed. She only walked two, but also struck out two. The senior had a perfect game through three innings and a no-hitter for 4.1 innings until she gave up a hit to Reagan Williamson in the top of the fifth.

That hit came back to bite the Highlanders as the pinch runner Peyton Dolejs scored the lone run of the game off the bat of Nikki Sorgi.

Sydney Fisher gave Radford its first hit in the fourth inning and made it to second on a sac bunt but a foul out and a strikeout ended the threat. She went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.

The Highlanders were looking for a comeback in the final two frames and had its best chance with the tying run, Fisher, at second with two outs but a strikeout ended the threat. Radford went 0-for-5 with runners on, including three strikeouts.

Despite Marvin's good outing, she was bested in the circle by Bowling Green's Payton Gottshall, who only allowed three hits, issued no walks and struck out 14.

Game 2 • Stony Brook 3, Radford 2 / 9 innings
Madison Canady's first long ball of the season ended a long scoring drought for the Highlanders and gave them a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Radford tacked onto the lead thanks to Sydney Fisher's fourth hit of the day that plated Paityn Moore, who reached on a walk.

Riley Oakes earned her first start of 2021 in the circle and was cruising through the first five innings. She only allowed three hits and struck out three, all while getting out unscathed after surrendering a leadoff double in the fifth.

Unfortunately, that momentum changed with two outs in the sixth inning when Melissa Rahrich hit a two-run homer to left field that tied the game up.

The long ball by Stony Brook forced extra innings and the Highlanders were unable to get their runner from second to score in the eighth and ninth innings. Radford pushed the go-ahead run to third but a strikeout and groundout ended the inning in the ninth.

The Seawolves manufactured a run and Rahrich earned her third RBI, and most important, with a sac fly in the ninth inning.

Despite the loss, Oakes pitched 8.2 innings and struck out five, while allowing three runs – two earned. The sophomore didn't allow a walk through the near nine inning outing.
