2/24/2021 7:27:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
RICHMOND, Va. – The Radford (0-3) women's lacrosse team took on their second in-state opponent, VCU (3-0) on Wednesday evening. The Highlanders kept up with the Rams until a second half rally propelled the home team to an 19-8 victory.
VCU mounted a 3-0 start, holding off a Radford goal until the midpoint of the 21-minute mark. Ava Goeller's man-up free position goal, her first of the season, found its way past the keeper to put the Highlanders on the board. The Rams responded with an offering of their own but the visitors tripled that output. With goals from Jennifer Shield, Lindsey Carroll, and Georgia Goering (her first) deadlocked the game at four all. However, with one second remaining VCU was able to rip one past the Radford defense to take the 5-4 lead heading into halftime.
Carroll found the back of the net early on in the second period and tied the contest up at five. With a pair of goals, the Rams added some security to their 7-5 lead. Not to be denied, Carroll ripped yet another one straight by the goalie for her fifth goal of the season. Feeling the pressure mounting by Radford, VCU 11 straight goals to increase their lead to 18 total.
Down the stretch Carroll's free position goal and Jessica Diorio's offering cut into the deficit for the Highlanders. With seconds ticking off the clock, the Rams scored another goal.
Kerianna McTavish paced the offensive efforts for VCU with seven goals and Gillian Belfiore notched seven saves during her time in goal for the Rams.
Maddie Bowman anchored the defense for the Highlanders facing a total of 19 goal attempts with a pair of saves.
Highlander Highlight
Shield has continued her streak of scoring at least one goal in each game played for Radford, her three-game stretch is the longest for the Highlanders so far this season.
