Highlanders Defeat Campbell In Double Overtime

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford (9-10, 9-8 BSC) women's basketball defeated Campbell (11-6, 8-4 BSC) in a double overtime defensive battle on Thursday night inside the Dedmon Center.

The contest held a total of 14 lead changes and nine ties throughout the duration of the game. However, these stats wouldn't come until much later in the game as the Highlanders were able to take the 24-15 lead at halftime over the Camels.

Campbell battled back into contention in the third period but Radford was able to maintain the lead down the stretch at 36-31 thanks to a one-second buzzer beating three-pointer from Destinee Marshall

The Camels outscored the Highlanders 23-18 in the fourth period which deadlocked the stanza at 54 all, via a paint jumper by Shyanne Tuelle. Radford got a good look at the basket but Makaila Wilson's jumper wasn't able to fall. With only two seconds remaining in regulation, the Highlanders were able to close out the period without a defensive miscue to force the initial overtime.

The teams' defensive efforts were multiplied in this first overtime as neither team could surpass nine points. Free throws from Destinee Marshall got the scoring rolling for the home team, taking the premature 56-54 lead. The teams traded baskets back-and-forth as neither were able to create a significant distance between their opposition. A split trip at the free throw line for Luana Serranho tied the game, this time at 63 all.

The Camels got on the board first in the double overtime period. The home team would go a stretch of almost two minutes without a bucket, but timely free throws from Marshall deadlocked the game at 65 all. However, Campbell responded quickly with a three-pointer from Tuelle to take the 68-65 lead. Ashley Tudor's layup and later and-one play ignited a spark for Radford on both sides of the ball as the Highlanders began to pull away with the 70-68 lead. Bryonna McClean's momentum shifting steal and score with under 30 seconds to go, propelled the home team to 72-68. Campbell got a good look from deep to notch their eighth point of the period but Radford was able to close thanks to pressure free throws from Tina Lindenfeld

The Camels had two looks at the basket in the final seconds of the game but were unable to convert.

Campbell was led by Tuelle who tallied 23 points, three steals and five rebounds through her 48 minutes on the hardwood.
