Highlanders Begin Livingston Era with Win over Gardner-Webb

RADFORD, Va. – The Sherisa Livingston is off to a great start as the Radford volleyball team topped Gardner-Webb in four sets (25-27, 25-21, 25-16, 25-18) on Saturday night inside the Dedmon Center.

Livingston, in her first game as a Division I collegiate head coach, had a tough task to open the year in conference play with no postseason tournament and the regular season champion receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Livingston and assistant coach Greg Manos performed well and guided the Highlanders to a four-set victory. After falling behind in the first set, the Highlanders stormed back and won the final three sets in decisive fashion.

The first set saw the Runnin' Bulldogs tally 17 kills with four blocks, while Radford had 12 total errors. That led to Gardner-Webb to a 27-25 first set victory. Radford cut down the attack errors in the second set en route to a 25-18 victory where Taylor O'Neal had five of her 12 kills.

The Highlanders hit a set-best .167 for both the final two sets and combined for 26 kills – 13 in the third and 13 in the fourth. Meanwhile, the Runnin' Bulldogs had a -.069 in the third set and fell victim to a 7-1 run midway through the fourth set. The combination of the two led Radford to outscore GWU 50-34 in the final two sets.

O'Neal tallied her third career double-double with 12 kills and 18 digs, both leading all players. Samantha Reitz chipped in 10 kills and a .208 hitting percentage. Radford had 8.0 total blocks and eight service aces. Jordan Coomes tallied three of the eight aces.

Tweet of the Game

Quotable
"It feels good to get the win," Livingston opened. "We seemed a little jittery at the beginning. The girls haven't played in over a year so we had to get some of the nerves out. And I speak for the team on this, but I think it feels really good to get the win."
