Radford Takes Series Against Gardner-Webb

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford (2-0, 2-0 BSC) women's volleyball team completed its sweep of Big South Conference foe Gardner-Webb (0-2, 0-2 BSC) on Sunday afternoon in a three-set decision. The Highlanders are currently enjoying a two-game winning streak under the direction of head coach Sherisa Livingston and assistant Greg Manos
 
Set One
Radford tallied the opening points on the afternoon before a Gardner-Webb kill interrupted the flow. However, the Highlanders never trailed in the set and strung together a compilation a block assist from Taylor O'Neal and Kennedi Johnson, an ace from Grace Green, a kill from Samantha Reitz, and a Runnin' Bulldog bad set. The points continued to come in waves for Radford as Gardner-Webb traded one point for several.
 
Down the stretch, the Runnin' Bulldogs pieced together five point run to bring their total to 13 points. Green tabbed another ace to seal the set one victory at 25-13.
 
Set Two
Unlike the opening set, the Highlanders had to play from behind as they crawled back from an early 5-1 deficit. The Radford rally began with another O'Neal kill and was followed by a strike from Jordan Coomes. A pair of miscues from Gardner-Webb tightened the Runnin' Bulldog lead to 9-7. Emily Dykes ignited another rally en route to tying the game at 11 via another Gardner-Webb mishap.
 
The second half of the set saw a pair of ties with the final deadlock at 18 all, block assists from the duo of Johnson and O'Neal propelled Radford to 19 points. The Highlanders carried that momentum forward pushing points all the way to 22 before a Runnin' Bulldogs response. Morgan Lawson's strike into Gardner-Webb territory aided Radford to the 2-0 lead. 
 
Set Three
The final nine points of the deciding set belonged to the Highlanders who had earlier battled back into contention. The Runnin' Bulldogs had amassed 20 points to the home team's 16. Radford ramped up their defensive presence causing multiple issues for the visitors, tagging on a block assist from Daria Burrows and Johnson. 
 
Kills from Lawson and O'Neal in addition to her service aces, gave the Highlanders a three-set sweep over Gardner-Webb plus the season series.
 
Team Leaders 
O'Neal led the Highlanders with nine kills and two aces. Johnson paced the defensive front with five blocks, Coomes served up 23 assists, with Green notching 16 digs. 
 
Up Next 
Radford continues its home stint on Saturday, February 13 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, February 14 at 2 p.m. against Charleston Southern.
