Radford Earns Series Sweep with Doubleheader Win Over High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. – A collective effort of strong hitting and precise pitching led the Radford baseball team to a doubleheader sweep over High Point on Saturday. The Highlanders took the first game, 9-5, and swept the weekend series with a 4-2 victory in game two.

Game 1
The Highlanders scored in five of the nine innings with the most runs scored coming in the fifth inning. After Radford scored a run in the first, High Point answered with a run in the second. The Highlanders broke the tie in the third inning when a two-out error allowed Jalen Buster to score.

The 2-1 lead grew to 5-1 when Straton Podaras plated two with a single to right field and the final run on the play scored on a throwing error by the right fielder. Podaras made it to third on the play and scored on a groundout in the next at bat. That gave Radford a 6-1 cushion through five innings.

The lead grew to seven runs after Dac Archer drove in two runs in the sixth. A pair of home runs in the sixth and seventh innings by the Panthers later cut the lead to three, 8-5, but Radford added another insurance run in the ninth.

Greg Duncan was in the zone after allowing the early run. He tossed 6.2 innings and only allowed four earned runs. The senior struck out four and only walked one in the winning effort. Ty Burton came in and shut the door with 2.1 innings of work and only one run allowed.

Archer and Podaras were the only Highlanders with multi-RBI games as Podaras led with three and Archer chipped in with two. Sean Cheely led the way with three of Radford's 12 hits, while Anthony Galati, David Bryant and Garrett Matheny each had two hits, including a double.

Game 2
Ryan Bywaters had a stellar outing on the mound pitching six innings and only allowing two runs while striking out five. The two runs came in the sixth inning but it came after the Highlanders had a 4-0 lead.

David Bryant doubled in two runs in the second inning and took a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning Will Harless scored on a fielder's choice and Tanner Barrs drove in Bryant to give the Highlanders a 4-0 lead.

In the meantime, Bywaters was cruising and only allowed one hit through five innings. He allowed just his second hit in the sixth inning, which led to two runs that cut the lead in half.

Bruce Hudson entered in the seventh and tossed two frames without allowing a hit and Alex Perkins earned his third save with a one-hit ninth inning. Hudson and Perkins had two strikeouts apiece.
