Highlanders Fall to ETSU in Doubleheader

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Radford softball team fell to ETSU in a doubleheader on Tuesday night. The first one ended in six innings as the Highlanders fell 9-1 and the second went into extra innings but didn't end in Radford's favor, 4-2.

Game 1 • Radford 1, ETSU 9 (6 inn.)
Radford left the bases loaded in the first inning without getting a run in and ETSU took advantage with four runs in the second inning highlighted by a two-run home run by Lili Bowen.

However, the Buccaneers left two on as Jessie Marvin was able to fly out to Sydney Fisher in left field. Radford put base runners on in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and even plated a run in the sixth when Madison Canady drove in Talia Douglas, who reached on a leadoff double.

The Highlanders had a good chance to get a few runs back but left the bases loaded in the sixth and went into the bottom half of the frame trailing 7-1. ETSU only needed three at-bats to plate two runs to end the game early.

All six of Radford's hits came from different players. The first five batters in the lineup earned hits with Douglas being the only Highlander with an extra base hit. Sarah Smith relieved Marvin in the circle and struck out two in three innings of work.

Game 2 • Radford 2, ETSU 4 (10 inn.)
Riley Oakes had one of her best performances on the mound as a Highlander on Tuesday night pitching nine innings with 10 strikeouts. She also only allowed two earned runs but surrendered a game-winning home run in the 10th.

Radford fell behind 1-0 after an ETSU run scored in the fifth inning, but was able to negate the run thanks to a Talia Douglas triple to right field that plated Oakes. She later came around to score on a sacrifice bunt by Abby Wilson. That gave Radford a 2-1 lead.

ETSU tied the game in the seventh inning with a leadoff home run by Kasidy Dunn. Oakes was able to get three straight outs and force extra innings.

The teams agreed to use the international tiebreaker rule and place runners on second. Neither team was able to scratch across the run but that changed in the 10th inning when Julia Fritz hit a walk-off home run to left center field.

Even though Oakes suffered the loss in the circle, she was one of two Highlanders with multi-hit games. She went 2-for-5 with a. run scored. Madison Canady was the other Highlander with a two-hit game, going 2-for-4.
