Highlanders Drop Doubleheader to Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Radford softball team fell to Virginia Tech both in five innings in a doubleheader on Wednesday night.

Game 1 • Radford 1, Virginia Tech 11 (5 inn.)
Sydney Fisher set the offensive tone for the game with a leadoff hit. Nothing came of it for the Highlanders but the Hokies scored three runs in the first inning and added three more in the second taking a 6-0 lead.

In the top of the third Fisher tallied her second hit of the night and moved to second by Riley Oakes. With two outs in the inning, the Highlanders were threatening but a ground out ended the threat.

The final five Virginia Tech runs came off of four home runs – two in bottom of the third and two in the bottom of the fourth.

Radford needed three four runs to extend the game past five innings and got one back in the fifth as Destiny Freeman scored on a fielder's choice. The Highlanders had the game-extending run at the plate in Talia Douglas, but she grounded out to third base.

Fisher and Oakes had four of Radford's five hits, while Abby Wilson had the other. She was the only Highlanders with an extra-base hit.

Jessie Marvin, Hannah Morris and Skyler DeHart each had appearances in the circle.

Game 2 • Radford 1, Virginia Tech 9 (5 inn.)
Virginia Tech scored three runs in the first inning, but Radford also scored a run of its own in the top of the second thanks to a Destiny Freeman home run.

The Hokies added to its lead with one run in the bottom of the second and tallied four runs on five hits in the bottom of the third. Radford had a runner on in the fourth with a two-out walk but a pop out ended the inning.

Radford got a runner on in the fifth but a double play ended the inning and a Grace Chavez pinch-hit home run ended the game in the fifth.
