Softball Drops Series Opener at Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Radford softball team fell to Charleston Southern in 11 innings, 5-4, on Friday evening at CSU Softball Field.
 
Radford fell down early in the first inning after Charleston Southern took an early 2-0 lead. The Highlanders didn't go away and got a two-run double by Abby Wilson in the third inning. The inning was prolonged due to a CSU error that allowed another run to score giving Radford a 3-2 lead.
 
Charleston Southern was able to get that run back with Radford's lone error of the game in the fifth inning. Neither team was able to score forcing the game to go into extra innings. That changed in the eighth inning thanks to a Destiny Freeman long ball – her second in as many games.
 
The Bucs manufactured a run in the eighth to send force the game into nine innings. Radford had a chance in the 11th inning with the go-ahead run at second, but with two outs in the inning that's as far as she'd get.
 
A pair of walks in the 11th inning led to walk-off single from the Buccaneers' Brooklyn Brewington.
 
Jessie Marvin tossed 10.2 innings and earned three strikeouts with five runs allowed – three earned. Wilson had two of the three RBIs, while Freeman had the other. Talia Douglas and Lindsay Hunter had four of the five walks with two each.
 
Up Next
The Highlanders will wrap up the series with a doubleheader at Charleston Southern on Saturday at 1 p.m.
