Softball Sweeps Doubleheader, Takes Series at Charleston Southern

CHARLESTON, S.C.Autumn Slemaker combined for six RBIs and Skyler DeHart threw 11 innings in a doubleheader series-clinching sweep over Charleston Southern on Saturday. The first saw the Highlanders score 14 in a 14-1 victory and the second was a 5-3 affair.

Game 1 • Radford 14, Charleston Southern 1
The Highlanders pounded a season-high 16 hits and scored 14 runs – also a season-high, as well as received a great pitching performance from Skyler DeHart.

DeHart tossed a season best six innings and only allowed one run. She struck out four, which was the same number of hits she allowed. The Riner, Va., native only threw 78 pitches and didn't allow a walk for the 22 batters faced.

The middle of the order provided all the offense for Radford. Destiny Freeman, batting fifth, was responsible for four RBIs with a 3-for -5 game and two runs scored. Autumn Slemaker also had a 3-for-5 game with three RBIs. Each player had a double and a home run.

Sydney Fisher and Talia Douglas also had three hits and three runs. Abby Wilson and Madison Canady each accounted for two of the 11 RBIs.

The scoring came early for Radford as the Highlanders took advantage of three errors in the first inning to score three runs. Radford scored four more runs on five hits in the fourth inning. Needing just one run to end the game early, the Highlanders batted around and plated seven in the sixth inning to take a 14-0 lead.

Charleston Southern needed seven runs to push the game into a seventh inning but only got one via Ashley Meckley home run.

Game 2 • Radford 5, Charleston Southern 3
Skyler DeHart got the nod in game two after her dominant performance in game one. She didn't disappoint with five innings pitched and only three runs allowed – two earned. It was her second win as a Highlander after her first came in game one of the day.

She was able to pound the strike zone after the offense plated four runs in the top half of the inning. Abby Wilson and Destiny Freeman each plated a run with a double and Autumn Slemaker doubled the score with a two-run single through the left side.

Charleston Southern cut the lead in half in the bottom of the first inning but DeHart was able to get three straight outs with two runners on base.

Each team scored a run in the fifth that included a big blast by Abby Wilson. She notched her second RBI of the game.

Jessie Marvin entered in the sixth and shut the Bucs down for two straight innings. She was able to get six straight outs after allowing a leadoff single in the sixth.

The series victory is the first to open conference play for Radford since the 2016 season.
