Radford Walks-Off One; Splits Doubleheader with UNCG

RADFORD, Va.Madison Canady's five RBIs through two games wasn't enough to pull off the sweep, but the Radford softball team split with UNCG in a pair of one-run games on Wednesday night at Radford Softball Stadium. The Highlanders won the first, 10-9, but dropped the second, 4-3.

Game 1 • Radford 10, UNCG 9
Madison Canady's 3-for-4 performance with three RBIs was just enough as the Highlanders won 10-9 in walk-off fashion. It was Canady who hit the walk-off in the seventh inning after having a pair of runners in scoring position.

Talia Douglas scored the winning run after with a single to right field. She moved to second and third on a couple of pitcher miscues and advanced home on Canady's single to right field.

Radford took an early 5-0 lead through four innings and Jessie Marvin was cruising with only two hits allowed through four. However, the Spartans were locked in during the fifth inning plating four runs on three hits, making it a 5-4 contest.

The Spartans eventually took a 9-6 lead but Sarah Smith was able to enter and shut down UNCG with a strike out and pop out to Autumn Slemaker at shortstop leaving two runners aboard. With momentum, Radford scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth that included the game-tying run with Lindsay Hunter's first hit this season.

Smith was able to get a 1-2-3 seventh inning and Canady did all the rest in the bottom of the frame. Smith picked up her second win of the season and Canady led with a multi-double performance.

Slemaker continued her hot hitting with a pair of RBIs and Hunter earned a season-high two RBIs as well.

Game 2 • Radford 3, UNCG 4
Riley Oakes was throwing gas in the second game with nine strike outs. This coming after her last outing on the mound saw 10 strikeouts.

The offense tied the game at one in the fourth inning after Oakes gave up a solo shot to left center field that hit the scoreboard.

Madison Canady took advantage with a pair of runners on base in the fifth inning and hit her third double of the day that scored Talia Douglas and Sydney Fisher. It was Canady's lone hit of the second game.

The next inning Oakes surrendered a single and a double that put the game-tying run on base. She struck out her seventh batter for the second out in the inning but a home run to right center field plated the go-ahead run.

Radford had one final chance as Douglas led off the seventh inning with a single. She advanced to second on an error by the right fielder and stole third on the next at-bat. However, the UNCG pitched buckled down and got three of the next four batters out to earn the victory.

Douglas was the only Highlander with a multi-hit game. Canady had two RBIs and Moore tallied the other RBI of the game. Oakes tossed a complete game but allowed four runs on five hits. She struck out nine and only walked one batter on 93 pitches.
