Radford Falls to Winthrop on Thursday Night

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford volleyball team fell in a three-set affair to Winthrop on Thursday evening inside the Dedmon Center.
 
The Highlanders took an 18-15 lead in the first set and kept a three-point edge four points later at 20-17. Winthrop scored four of the next five points and tied it at 21. After a Morgan Lawson kill to put Radford up 22-21, Winthrop ended the set scoring four unanswered and won the set 25-22.
 
Winthrop kept the momentum going into the second set and took an early 15-9 lead. After a Hailey Flowers kill, the Eagles scored four of the next six points and took a 19-11 advantage. Radford scored the next two points thanks to a kill by Emily Dykes and an Eagle attack error. However, Winthrop went on a 6-3 run and won the set, 25-16.
 
It was all Eagles for the third set with 12 kills and a .286 hit percentage. The Eagles also had four services aces and three blocks in the set. The Highlanders committed two service errors, eight attack errors and hit -.111.
 
Radford committed 23 attack errors with five service errors and six reception errors in the match. Winthrop had 39 kills compared to Radford's 27.
 
For the second straight match, Reitz led the Highlanders in scoring with 11 points – all from kills. She also had the best hit percentage of any player on the team. Jordan Coomes logged 11 assists and Flowers led the way with seven digs.
 
Up Next
Radford will be back on the court Friday at 2 p.m., as three seniors will be honored prior to first serve.
