Radford Falls in Home Finale to Winthrop

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford volleyball team fell in a three-set affair to Winthrop on Friday afternoon inside the Dedmon Center. This was the final home match of the season for Radford and marked senior night as the team honored Jordan Coomes, Erin Hetherington, and Maddie Lentz.

The first set of the match was a back and forth affair for the two teams, as both traded points regularly throughout the set. Radford grabbed a 6-3 edge early on thanks to a kill by Hailey Flowers, of which she had three in the set. Winthrop took the lead at the 10-9 mark though and didn't let go. Reitz also added three kills for Radford in the set, while Shelby Hernandez led the team with six digs.

Winthrop continued its strong play into the second set as the Eagles put up 13 kills to a .257 hitting percentage. Flowers' kill made it just an 8-9 set score early, but Winthrop went on an 8-2 run to take a commanding 17-11 lead. Grace Green recorded over half of the Highlanders' digs on the set with eight, while Coomes added six assists.

Radford battled in the third set but was unable to make the comeback late to fall in straight sets on the match. Emily Dykes and Laila Wallace led the team with three kills apiece, with Wallace also adding an ace. Radford recorded a match-high 13 kills in the set, but Winthrop responded with a match-high of their own at 17.

Radford totaled more attacks than Winthrop at 123-116, but Winthrop won the kill battle at 43-30. Radford also recorded four total blocks and 49 digs. Flowers had a team-high 10 kills which is the fourth time she has recorded double-digit kills this season and her first since she collected 13 kills last week at UNC Asheville. Green and Hernandez tied for the team lead in digs with 10 each, while Hetherington led Radford in the assist column with 10 and Lentz not far behind with 7 assists.
