Radford Falls in Three Sets at USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Radford volleyball team fell in a three-set affair to USC Upstate on Thursday afternoon on the road despite a strong late effort by the Highlanders.

In the opening set of the match the Highlanders out blocked the Spartans 3-2, but were unable to overcome an early deficit to fall 25-15. Radford totaled 11 kills in the set with Hailey Flowers leading the way marking four kills to start her strong performance.

USC Upstate continued its strong play into the second set, taking a large lead early to eventually win the set 25-12. Flowers added three more kills to push her total to seven on the match while Samantha Reitz provided a solo block, the lone block of the set for the Highlanders. Radford fell victim to three service aces in the set while the Spartans only committed one service error. Daria Burrows and Emma Young also showed flashes of offense for Radford, combining for four kills.

Radford showed life in the third set taking the lead twice around the midpoint of the set. Radford's second lead came at the 12-11 mark in the set thanks to a block by Kennedi Johnson and Tytianna Roberts that forced a USC Upstate timeout. From there, though, the Spartans took command of the set going on a 10-0 run.

The Highlanders showed fight near the end of the third set not going away quietly, as Young came alive for three kills late to tie for the team lead. Late in the set it was 24-23 after a kill by Emily Dykes, an ace by Shelby Hernandez, and an attack error by USC Upstate gave Radford a 3-0 run. But the Highlanders comeback attempt came up just short as the Spartans got a kill to finish the set at 25-23.

Overall in the match the Highlanders recorded 28 kills with Young leading the way after her strong third set with eight kills total and Flowers finishing just behind her with seven kills. Young and Flowers also added eight digs to their colorful box score while Laila Wallace led the team with two block solos and one block assist. Jordan Coomes tallied 12 assists with Erin Hetherington also collecting nine to fuel the supportive effort in Radford's offense.
