Radford Falls in Second Match at USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Radford volleyball team fell in a three-set affair to USC Upstate on Friday afternoon on the road despite strong performances from Samantha Reitz and Laila Wallace.

In the opening set of the match the Highlanders kept it close early but weren't able to gain a lead in a set that USC Upstate won controllingly 25-12. Wallace and Emily Dykes led the team in kills with two each while Shelby Hernandez and Emma Young both recorded three digs.

USC Upstate continued its strong play into the second set, as Radford made multiple runs but came up just short 19-25. Radford used three attack errors by the Spartans early in the set to make it just an 8-11 deficit, and then had another 4-0 run later in the set thanks to some more kills from Wallace to make it just a 20-15 deficit. Three Highlanders recorded three kills in the set, with Dykes, Wallace, and Reitz combining for nine. Radford had two blocks in the set as a team, and Grace Green led the team in the defensive effort with six digs.

Radford showed resilience in the third set, similar to the previous night, making the set close late. At the 23-16 mark, Radford went on a 4-0 run to force a Spartan timeout. Reitz, Wallace, and Daria Burrows each had kills to fuel the run, but the Spartans came out of the timeout to seal the set and the match winning 25-20.

Overall in the match Radford got most of its point production from Reitz and Wallace. Reitz totaled seven kills and three block assists while Wallace recorded seven kills and two block assists. Three Highlanders saw double-digit digs in the match with the defense coming from Taylor O'Neal (11 digs), Green (10 digs), and Emma Young (10 digs). Young also had the lone service ace on the match for Radford. Erin Hetherington supported the offense all day finishing with 12 assists by the end of the match.
