Highlanders Fall in Series Finale at UNC Asheville

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford baseball dropped the series finale at UNC Asheville Saturday afternoon in a game pushed back due to inclement weather.

Radford jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the game thanks to a two-out double by Connor Bagnieski in the first inning, scoring Sean Cheely who had reached on an error. Vinnie Venturi got the start for Radford on the mound and pitched a clean first two innings to hold the Radford lead into the third inning.

UNC Asheville touched up Venturi for three runs in the bottom of the third, though, and wouldn't let go of that lead. Venturi finished the day pitching 4.2 innings, striking out four, and allowing just one walk.

Alex Perkins relieved Venturi in the fifth and finished the game from there with a strong performance just over three innings. Perkins limited the Bulldogs to just one run allowing the Highlanders to remain within striking distance. He finished with three strikeouts and allowed no free bases while facing 13 batters.

Radford made a run through several Bulldog miscues in the final frame of the game to get their second run of the game. Bagnieski reached by an error on the first baseman, then advanced three times off wild pitches to score his second run of the game. UNC Asheville didn't allow any other baserunners that inning and finished off the game with a 5-2 score.

Offensively David Bryant and Will Harless had the other two hits on the day, with Bryant reaching a second time via a walk. UNC Asheville recorded seven total strikeouts through the nine frames, limiting the Radford offense.
