Radford Sweeps Gardner-Webb on Saturday, Earns Series Sweep

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Radford softball team swept Gardner-Webb in a doubleheader on Saturday en route to a three-game sweep over the weekend. The team outscored the Runnin' Bulldogs 12-2 on the day. The first was a 3-1 victory and the second was a 9-1 win in six innings.

Game 1
Just like last Saturday, Skyler DeHart pitched a gem in the circle and picked up her third win of the season. She tossed a complete game with only one run allowed. She only gave up six hits and three walks but tallied three punch outs.

Things were even early on, even though the Highlanders got four hits through four innings. The fifth hit tied the game at one as Sydney Fisher drove in Paityn Moore from second with a one-out single. Fisher scored on the next at-bat after the inning was prolonged due to an error.

Destiny Freeman hit a two-out knock in the sixth inning for her third hit of the game and scored on the next at-bat thanks to Autumn Slemaker.

Gardner-Webb led off the seventh with back-to-back hits but the game-tying run never advanced into scoring position as an infield pop out ended the game.

Freeman had three of Radford's eight hits and Slemaker had the only double for Radford.

Game 2
Game two saw a lot more offense, especially after a rain delay. The delay happened in the middle of the fourth inning with the game at 3-0 in Radford's way. Radford scored two runs in the first inning and added another in the third with a Talia Douglas home run.

Gardner-Webb's Brooke Perry cut into the lead with a solo home run in the fifth. The Highlanders answered in the top of the sixth with six runs on seven hits. That put the run-rule into effect and Riley Oakes, who earned the start in the circle got a 1-2-3 inning. It was her fifth inning only seeing three baters.

Oakes struck out four and only allowed two hits on the way to her third win of the season.

Radfor tallied 12 hits in six innings led by Oakes offensively with a 3-for-4 night and two runs scored. Fisher and Douglas each scored two runs giving the top of the order six of the nine runs scored. Douglas, along with Canady, added two RBIs on the night.
