Softball Drops Doubleheader to Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Radford softball team dropped a doubleheader matchup to Western Carolina on Tuesday. The first saw a dramatic ending a 5-4 loss and Highlanders dropped the second game, 4-3.

Game 1
Radford carried a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning and needed just one out to begin Tuesday with a win. However, a two-out single plated the game tying run and left a pair of runners aboard.

The next batter hit a ball to second base that was misplayed but ruled a hit. With speed on the base paths, the Catamounts were able to push across the game-winning run.

The Highlanders took a 2-0 lead through three innings and Jessie Marvin was able to get out of some bases loaded jams and left nine runners stranded. That came back to haunt her in the sixth inning as the Catamounts took a 3-2 lead. However, Marvin was able to get out of the inning with the bases loaded with a strikeout – her seventh of the game.

Talia Douglas gave Radford a 4-3 lead with a two-run blast in the top of the seventh. That was her lone hit of the game. Sydney Fisher led the way at the dish with a 3-for-4 performance. Paityn Moore also tallied a multi-hit game with a 2-for-3 game that included her first career home run. The two home runs were all of Radford's extra base hits.

Western Carolina left 12 runners on base, while Radford left seven. The Highlanders also committed four errors in the seven innings played.

Game 2
Western Carolina struck first in the top of the first inning with a pair of runs but Sarah Smith, who got the start in the circle, got out of the inning leaving a runner on.

The power showed for Radford in the fourth inning as Douglas hit her second home run of the night – a solo shot that cut the lead in half. Madison Canady gave Radford the lead with a two-run shot that plated Abby Wilson, who reached by drawing a walk.

The Catamounts regained the lead in the fourth inning with a two-run single from Jeralynn Wells. Radford was able to get a runner aboard on every inning. Skyler DeHart entered in the fifth and pitched 2.0 innings of one hit softball.

Riley Oakes, Canady and Douglas had six of the seven hits with two each. Canady had a home run and Douglas had a home run and a double.
