Softball Drops Doubleheader to Appalachian State

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 BOONE, N.C. – The Radford softball team fell to Appalachian State on a Saturday doubleheader in Boone, N.C. The Highlanders dropped the first game 5-2 and the second 3-1.

Game 1
Radford cut into an early Appalachian State lead thanks to a home run by Destiny Freeman in the second inning that made it a 2-1 game. The Mountaineers negated that run with a home run of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

Sidney Fisher drove in Lindsay Hunter with a run in the third but that was all the scoring Radford could get. Appalachian State plated one more in the bottom of the third and added another in the fifth.

Radford was able to get a runner on in the fourth through seventh innings. However, none of them were ever able to get into scoring position.

App State's Kenzie Longanecker tossed a complete game and only allowed five hits. She only struck out one. Jessie Marvin struck out three and allowed five runs – only three earned.

Freeman had the only multi-hit game for Radford and one of the two RBIs. Fisher had the other in a 1-for-2 day. Freeman's home run was the only extra-base hit for the Highlanders.

Game 2
Skyler Dehart tossed a gem with only three hits – all in the sixth inning. She took a no-hitter into the sixth. She hit the first batter of the inning and then got an out. The next at-bat gave the Mountaineers a lead with a two-run home run by Sidney Russell.

Appalachian State tacked on an insurance run with an RBI single to right field later in the inning.

Autumn Slemaker – who already had the lone run for Radford with a solo home run in the third – was set to lead off the seventh. She reached on an error and then another error in the inning put runners at first and second. A ground out pushed the game-tying run into scoring position.

Sydney Fisher hit a deep fly ball to right field that was deep enough to score Slemaker from third but she was called out for leaving early and the game ended.

Riley Oakes and Talia Douglas had the other hits, along with Slemaker. DeHart suffered the tough-luck loss. Radford left six runners aboard as the Mountaineers committed six errors in the game.
