Grogan’s Golden Goal Pushes Highlanders to Victory

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Ashlyn Grogan played hero in Saturday afternoon's rainy game that Radford (1-9) won 11-10 in overtime over William & Mary (3-4).

Headed into overtime with a 10-10 score the Highlanders wasted zero time after Katie Bendrick won the draw control. Kirsten Grzybowski found Grogan open in front of the net and supplied the pass that allowed for Grogan's smooth golden goal. It was just the Williamsburg native's third goal of the season.

The Highlanders found clutch goals all day in a match that saw three lead changes and five ties. The first goal of the day came from Jessica Diorio, her fifth of the season and just one of two goals she had in the game.

After the Tribe went on a 2-0 run to claim a 2-1 lead, the Highlanders responded with three straight goals. Ava Goeller scored her first goal of the game to equalize the score at two while Lindsey Carroll gave the team its second lead of the day at 3-2. Diorio assisted Goeller's goal while Grogan notched her first assist of the day on Carrol's goal. Grace Gleason scored the final goal of the 3-0 run to make the lead 4-2, assisted by Grogan once again.

William & Mary responded with a 2-0 run of its own, though, to tie the game at four-all. Goeller scored her second goal of the day off a free position shot with 6:43 remaining in the half to return the lead back to Radford. Capping off the first half scoring was Diorio who scored her second goal of the game which also came off a free position shot to make the lead 6-4 headed into halftime.

In the first half Radford out-shot William & Mary 14-9, committed two less turnovers, was a perfect 14-14 in clear attempts, and picked up 10 ground balls in one of their best halves of the season.

Radford picked up right where it left off in the second half with Grzybowski scoring her second goal of the season. A goal scored by G. Gleason and assisted by Carroll made it an 8-5 game with 19:19 left in the second half. Right after that goal, the game entered a weather delay due to lightning in the area and the Highlanders wouldn't return to action for another hour.

There was no rust when the Highlanders returned to play, as Carroll added another goal off a free position shot to make it a 9-7 lead. William & Mary didn't go away quietly using a 2-0 run to tie the game once again at nine-all. Goeller's third goal of the game gave her the hat trick and a late Highlander lead with 2:33 left on the clock. The Tribe just wouldn't go away, tying the game again at 10 with 2:08 left in the match which eventually forced the game into overtime.

In just under two minutes the Highlanders had their golden goal from Grogan, sealing the match and the Highlanders' first win of the season which has included tough competition at every turn. Grogan's golden goal was just the cherry on the top of the cake for her stellar game in which she tabbed two assists to go with her clutch goal.

As a team the Highlanders were a force on defense all game, limiting the opponent to 19 shots which is a season low. Radford also won the turnover battle with Bendrick leading the team causing four turnovers. Libby Rehkemper picked up five ground balls which was tied for best amongst all competitors.
