Bats Come Alive in Doubleheader Sweep over Western Carolina

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford softball team notched 21 runs and 27 hits through two games in a doubleheader sweep over Western Carolina on Friday evening.

Game 1 • Radford 9, Western Carolina 8 (10 inn.)
Abby Wilson stole the show in the first game of the day with her first career multi-home run game, while Riley Oakes notched a four-hit game – the first of her career. Talia Douglas had a home run and led all players with three RBIs.

Wilson's second home run came at an opportune time when the team was down a run in the sixth inning. Her lead-off home run tied the game up. The Highlanders had opportunities to win in the seventh but the game-winning run was picked off at third for the second out.

It wasn't until the 10th inning when Sydney Fisher led off the inning with a double, then stole third on a heads up play when the pitcher wasn't in the circle yet. Four pitches later on an 0-2 count, Oakes delivered her fourth hit of the game and plated Fisher for the win.

Back-to-back homers in the second inning by Wilson and Douglas put Radford up 7-2 then WCU scored six in a row through three innings and took an 8-7 lead, until Wilson changed that in the sixth.

Radford's top five batters in the lineup had 12 of the team's 15 hits, while WCU's top five had 10 of the 14.

Jessie Marvin (2-5) earned the win and pitched 169 pitches, while Jayme Eilers tossed 173 pitches but suffered the loss.

Game 2 • Radford 12, Western Carolina 8
The second game resembled the first after Radford took a 6-2 lead at the end of the second inning. Then Western Carolina scored four in the fourth inning with a Kailey McNeil three-run double and tied the game.

Radford answered with five runs in the fifth after Hannah Morris entered in the top half of the inning and didn't allow a run. Madison Canady and Sydney Fisher each plated two runs with a double and Olivia Turpin gave Radford the lead driving in the first run of the inning.

WCU's Samantha Reele cut into the lead with a two-run blast in the sixth but Radford got it back as Fisher earned her third RBI of the game. She ended game two with a 3-for-4 night and three RBIs. Two of her hits were doubles.

Douglas, Wilson, Turpin and Canady each had multi-RBI games, while Oakes, Canady and Freeman each had two hits in game two.
