Softball Earns Fourth Straight Win with Doubleheader Victory Over N.C. A&T

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Radford softball team won its fourth straight thanks to a doubleheader victory over North Carolina A&T on Sunday afternoon.

Game 1 • Radford 8, N.C. A&T 5
Radford struck first after Abby Wilson doubled in Riley Oakes in the first inning. However, North Carolina A&T answered back when Jocelyn Bennett hit a two-run single up the middle in the third inning.

The Highlanders tied the game in the fourth inning when Madison Canady scored on a groundout. In the next inning Talia Douglas tallied her third home run in as many games with a three-run shot to left field. The big blast gave Radford a 5-2 lead. Olivia Turpin drove in one more run in the inning for the Highlanders to give them a four-run cushion.

The Aggies tallied a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to cut their deficit to one-run but Destiny Freeman tattooed a ball to right center field that put the Highlanders ahead by three in the seventh.

After Jessie Marvin earned the start, Hannah Morris earned the save pitching 1.2 innings of no-hit softball.

Douglas, Freeman and Autumn Slemaker combined for six of the 12 hits with two each.

Game 2 • Radford 6, N.C. A&T 4
The Highlanders withstood a late rally by the Aggies in game two. Radford had a 6-0 lead through five and a half innings but the Aggies got one back with an RBI single by Alyssa Smith.

Then in the seventh inning, Kayla Taylor homered to right field to cut the lead to four. After two outs, back-to-back doubles, a single and a wild pitch made it a 6-4 game and put the game-tying run at the dish.

Riley Oakes (1-1) was able to get out of the jam and end the game with a groundout to shortstop. She earned her first win of the 2021 season and struck out seven. Offensively, she had a three-hit performance.

Autumn Slemaker tallied a career-high three hits in a 3-for-4 game. Madison Canady also tallied a multi-hit game. Oakes, Slemaker and Canady all had an RBI.

The Highlanders scored four runs on four hits and took an early 4-0 lead after the first inning. Radford then added another run in the fifth and Oakes was cruising with only one hit allowed. Despite earning its final run, Radford left the bases loaded in the sixth and it almost came back to haunt them.
