Radford Drops Doubleheader to USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate's pitching staff limited Radford's offense to just one run on seven hits across two games Saturday afternoon, as the visiting Highlanders were swept in a doubleheader by the Spartans at Cleveland S. Harley Park.

Upstate took the first game by a 7-0 margin and won the second half of the twin bill, 6-1.

Vinnie Venturi kept the Highlanders in the first game until the Spartans scored five runs across the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to blow open what was a 2-0 game. Radford had just two hits in the contest and was shutout for the first time since a 7-0 loss to Campbell during the 2019 season.

The Highlanders had a prime opportunity to score when Sean Cheely led off the fourth with a triple, but two strikeouts and a runner caught stealing at second ended the scoring threat. Radford had just one runner in scoring position after that.

Radford took an early 1-0 lead in the second game on a Straton Podaras RBI single that scored Cheely. Ryan Bywaters cruised through the first three innings before encountering trouble. Upstate left the bases loaded in the fourth but a grand slam off the bat of Devin Buckner gave the Spartans a lead they would not relinquish.

Radford had just two hits in the final six innings, a Jalen Buster bunt single in the seventh and a Cheely single in the eighth. Upstate added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh, and starting pitcher Ben Ferrer threw a complete game for the home side.

STAT OF THE GAME
Cheely accounted for three of Radford's seven hits and has 11 hits in his last seven games.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Cheely and Podaras were the only Highlanders to reach base safely in both games. Podaras' RBI single in the second game marked the sixth time this season Radford scored in the first inning of a game. The Highlanders have had a lead at some point in eight of the first 10 games. Venturi struck out seven in 5.1 innings in the first game for Radford, while Bywaters had five strikeouts in 5.0 innings in the second game.
