Radford Drops Midweek Tilt at ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Radford baseball team fell to ETSU, 6-0, on Tuesday afternoon in Johnson City, Tenn.

The offense was unable to get more than four hits – two provided by Garrett Matheny – and was unable to comeback after falling behind early.

The early innings saw a comeback from Hunter Williams, who earned made his first appearance since Feb. 18, 2020 after returning from injury. He got the nod for the start and tossed 2.1 innings, allowed three hits and two runs – one earned.

He gave way to Bruce Hudson in the third inning. A costly error prolonged the inning and allowed the Buccaneers to plate three and take a 4-0 lead.

The Highlanders were able to get a man aboard in the fourth through eighth innings but only one made it into scoring position. That came in the fifth inning when Matheny ripped a leadoff double down the right field line. Sean Cheely drew a one-out walk but two straight outs ended the threat.

Matheny led way offensively for Radford with a 2-for-3 day, including a double. He was bested by Kyle Richardson with a 3-for-4 performance and three doubles for ETSU. He had two RBIs.

Brock Smith was a bright spot out of the bullpen pitching 2.1 innings with a career-high six strikeouts and only one run allowed. Derek Domecq and Landon Higgerson each earned a strikeout in the final two frames.
