Highlanders Cruise to Fourth Straight Victory

RADFORD, Va. – Radford (4-9, 3-1 BSC) never trailed against Longwood (1-10, 0-2 BSC) on a rainy Saturday afternoon en route to their fourth straight victory and second straight at home.

The Highlanders made the first punch of the game going on a 3-0 run in the first 13 minutes. Grace Gleason scored her first goal of the game to give Radford the 1-0 lead and three minutes later it was Kirsten Grzybowski who doubled the lead to make it 2-0. The freshman Ava Goeller made it a 3-0 lead and put the team squarely in control.

Longwood got back-to-back goals to shorten the lead to just one goal. The pairing of Ashlyn Grogan and G. Gleason was the response for Radford as G. Gleason's second goal of the game pushed Radford back out in front by two. Both squads would play stout defense for seven minutes before another goal was scored. Margaret Gleason joined the scoring party while a man down to make it 5-2 Radford. Longwood got off one more goal before the half ended but overall, it was a dominant Highlander performance from start to finish in the half.

That theme would carry into the second half as the defense didn't allow a goal for the first 19 minutes of the half. That allowed the Highlanders to build up a 9-3 lead that would prove insurmountable for the Lancers.

Contributing to that scoring push were Lindsey Carroll and Jennifer Shield providing two goals each. The two goals from Shield were a big moment for the Milton, Ga. native who had missed parts of the last month of play due to injury. Longwood would go on a 4-0 run to end the game, but it was Radford who walked home with the 9-7 win.

The Highlanders offense never let up outshooting the Lancers 31-19 in the match, 19-13 on goal. Radford also won the turnover battle 19-25, with Katie Bendrick and Rachel Rogers both forcing four turnovers each. Rogers also led the team in ground balls picking up six with G. Gleason also picking up five.
