Radford Drops Doubleheader to USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – It was a battle for the series as the Radford softball hung competed solidly but fell just short in a pair of losses to USC Upstate on Sunday. The first saw the Spartans score six unanswered in a 6-4 loss and the second was a 4-3 walk off.

Game 1
Radford came out of the gate with something to prove and scored four runs early. The first came in the first inning when Sydney Fisher scored on a sacrifice fly. Radford scored three more in the third thanks to a two-run double by Madison Canady and an RBI single by Destiny Freeman.

The Highlanders had six hits though three innings and USC Upstate only had two. Skyler DeHart was dealing but ran into a little bit of trouble in the third as the Spartans cut the lead in half, 4-2, with a two-run single by Bre Cooper.

A home run in the sixth inning tie the game and USC Upstate tallied four of its seven hits in the sixth inning plating four runs on four hits taking a 6-4 lead.

Radford had the go-ahead run at the dish with two outs in the top of the seventh but a fly out to center field ended the threat.

Seven different players had a hit for Radford. Talia Douglas and Fisher each had two. Canady and Lindsay Hunter each had doubles.

Game 2
USC Upstate kept their unanswered run streak going with its first run of the game in the third inning, putting them ahead 1-0. That lead didn't last long as Madison Canady belted a solo shot to left center field to tie the game at one.

The Spartans plated a pair of runs in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead and just as it did before, the lead didn't last long. This time Autumn Slemaker tied up the game with her second hit of the game in the top of the sixth inning. This one was a double down the left field line that scored Canady and Abby Wilson.

The Spartans and Highlanders each left a pair of runners aboard in each of their next times at the plate. USC Upstate was able to get its lead runner on base safely to lead off the seventh inning. The Spartans played small ball to manufacture the walk-off run. It came off the bat of Tiffany Domingue who plated Celeste Delorenzo on a sac fly.

Riley Oakes, who got the nod in the circle, was the only Highlander with a multi-hit game. She tossed 4.0 innings with one run allowed on three hits and struck out two. Abby Wilson and Slemaker had Radford's only doubles and Sydney Fisher capped off her seven-hit weekend with a triple.
