Highlanders Split Doubleheader with Longwood

RADFORD, VA. – It was a tale of two games for the Radford softball team against Longwood as the first saw a 10-2 loss for the Highlanders and the second was a 10-2 five-inning victory to even up the series on Tuesday evening at Radford Softball Stadium.

Game 1
Longwood came out swinging and plated a run in the first inning. After that, the Highlanders answered with a pair of runs thanks to a Talia Douglas RBI double and a Destiny Freeman RBI single.

The Lancers answered in the second inning with a two-run home run to take a 3-2 lead. Longwood tacked on two more in the inning and took a 5-2 edge. Sarah Smith entered in relief and only allowed one run through 4.2 innings keeping the Highlanders within striking distance.

She was bested by Sydney Backstrom who tossed 7.0 innings with two runs on five hits and six strikeouts. She only allowed three base runners in the final six innings.

Smith ran into some trouble allowing four more runs in the seventh innings and Radford was unable to plate any more runs after the first inning.

Riley Oakes had two of the Highlanders' five hits, while Douglas, Wilson and Freeman had the other three. Wilson and Douglas had a double each.

Game 2
Radford tallied 14 hits and scored 10 runs in the second game, but Jessie Marvin stole the show only allowing two hits. The first two runs came on a two-run home run by Alexis Wayland in the first inning and the second came from Madison Blair in the second inning.

The Lancers had one more base runner through the final three innings and Marvin was able to not allow a base runner for the final seven outs. Marvin struck out four and only allowed one walk through the five-inning complete game.

Meanwhile the Highlander offense showed up for game two and plated four runs in the first inning led by Destiny Freeman's two-run home run. Talia Douglas tacked on another in the second inning with her second double on the day, this one plating Riley Oakes.

The Highlands loaded the bases in the fifth inning and Sydney Fisher cleared them with her first home run of the season. It was a big one that plated four and gave Radford a 9-2 lead. Madison Canady did the rest with an RBI single to right field that scored Oakes for the third time in the game.

The top four hitters for Radford had nine of the team's 14 hits, led by Fisher's three. She also led with four RBIs. Oakes, Douglas and Canady each had a pair of hits. Canady and Freeman each tallied multi-RBI games.

Up Next
Radford will look to add to its 10 unanswered runs and to win the series over Longwood on Wednesday at 10 a.m. The game was moved up due to impending weather in the forecast later in the day.
