Radford Fans 14, Drops Series Opener to Winthrop

RADFORD, Va. – Despite being one strikeout shy of tying a season-high, the Radford baseball team fell to Winthrop, 9-7, in the series opener on Friday night at Carter Memorial Stadium.

The Radford pitching staff was able to get 14 pitching staff, the second-most all season as a team. Vinnie Venturi tied a season-high with seven, while Landon Higgerson struck out all three batters he faced and Bruce Hudson tallied four.

The Highlanders battled back after being down 7-3 through five innings and tied the game at seven in the sixth inning thanks to a grand slam by Garrett Matheny. It was his fifth RBI of the game. His first run that he drove in came in the fourth inning and cut the Winthrop lead to three, 6-3.

Winthrop took an early 5-0 lead through two and a half innings but David Bryant put the Highlanders on the board in the bottom of the third with an RBI single to right field. The Eagles scored another in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead, but Radford negated that run thanks to an infield RBI single by Dac Archer. Matheny plated his first run later in the inning as Anthony Galati scored on the groundout.

Ty Hooks tallied his third hit and plated his third run in the fifth as the Eagles went ahead, 7-3. Winthrop picked up the scoring in the seventh inning as Andrew Jenner legged out a fielder's choice and avoided hitting into a double play and Spencer Yankle scored to put the Eagles ahead, 8-7. The team's final run came in the eighth inning on a wild pitch.

Radford tried to make a comeback with the game-tying run at the plate in the ninth inning. Will Harless notched his third hit of the game after being down 0-2 in the ninth inning with two outs. He made it to second on a wild pitch but a strike out ended the game.

Matheny tallied five RBIs for the second time in his career. The last time he notched five RBIs was against Charleston Southern on April 20, 2018.
