Highlanders Fall in Heartbreaker at Big South Championship

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A close match late fell the opponents way in a heartbreaking loss for Radford (12-8) Saturday afternoon in the Big South Championship against Presbyterian (12-8).

The day started well for the Highlanders in an incredible comeback to win the doubles point. Radford trailed on all three courts but was able to come back on courts two and three to win the doubles point. The tandem of Demis Taramonlis and Andres Silva trailed 2-5 at one point, but came all the way back to win in a tiebreaker 7-6(2). Aditya Balsekar and Dinos Raptis also trailed but found the last two points of the game to win 7-5 and seal the early 1-0 lead.

Singles play was an all-out battle between the two squads. Taramonlis was the lone player on either side to have no issues, dispatching his opponent 6-2, 6-1 on court two to give Radford a 2-0 lead. Presbyterian took courts five and six, though, to tie up the match at 2-all.

The freshman Guilherme Severin supplied the next big win for the Highlanders, taking court three 6-2, 7-5 to make it a 3-2 lead. Presbyterian wound up getting court four tying the match right back up at three.

Court one was the final and deciding court. Yevhen Sirous showed true heart after a tough first set and coming back to win the second set and force a winner-take-all third set. Sirous trailed 2-5 in the final set but didn't give up winning two straight points to make it just a 4-5 deficit. Unfortunately, the comeback attempt came up just short as Presbyterian would take the final court and win the match 4-3.
