Brandow’s Big Clinch Sends Highlanders to Championship

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Radford (8-10) won an intense match that included battles on every court Saturday afternoon in the Big South semifinals against the two seed Presbyterian (5-13). With the match tied at 3-3, Emily Brandow played hero and came back in the third set to send the Highlanders to the championship.

A crucial doubles point was highly contested by the two teams. Salma Loudili and Melissa Ifidzhen had zero issues on court one however, winning 6-2. Presbyterian took court three, turning all the attention to court two. Malin Falk and Brandow trailed early but rallied late and stormed back to take the court and clinch the doubles point 6-4.

Despite only one court going to three sets in singles play, every court felt like a battle from start to finish. Presbyterian took the first singles point on court two to even the match at 1-all. After taking court six, it was suddenly a 2-1 Blue Hose lead.

Radford got its first singles court of the day in straight sets from Falk who avenged her earlier season loss to Presbyterian. Falk won 6-3, 7-5 and came up big in a tough second set to even the score at two once again.

Reigning Big South player and freshman of the year Loudili was the next victorious Highlander, giving the team a slight 3-2 edge. Loudili won easily in the first set, but was locked in a hard fought battle with Presbyterian's best before ultimately winning in straight sets 6-1, 7-5.

Presbyterian would win court five which turned all heads to the final court still in action, where Brandow was in a contested third set on court four. Brandow had won with force 6-2 in the first set, but her opponent responded by winning the second set and forcing a winner-takes-all third set tiebreaker. Tied at 4-4, Brandow came back big time to clinch the match winning two straight points and handing the Highlanders a 4-3 victory.
