Comeback Falls Short as Radford Drops Series Opener to USC Upstate

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford baseball team fell short in a ninth inning comeback against USC Upstate, 3-2, on Friday afternoon at Carter Memorial Stadium.

Despite outstanding pitching performances by Ty Burton and Vinnie Venturi, the Spartans took a 2-0 lead through six innings. Venturi got the nod and went 4.1 innings with just one run and two strikeouts. He gave way to Burton in the fifth with a runner aboard and one out.

Burton took over and only allowed two runs, one that came in the sixth and the other that came in the ninth. Derek Domecq also earned an appearance on the mound pitching 0.1 innings.

The Radford pitching was great, but was bested by USC Upstate's Jordan Marks. He tossed 7.2 innings and only allowed one run on five hits with eight strikeouts. Sean Hupp earned the save for the Spartans.

The Highlanders scored their two runs in the eighth and ninth innings. The first came in the eighth when Anthony Galati singled in a run but was out at second trying to put himself in scoring position with two outs. That cut the USC Upstate lead in half, 2-1.

USC Upstate tacked on a run in the top of the ninth when Jason Matthews scored on a groundout. Radford looked to make a comeback in the ninth as David Bryant led off the inning with a triple down the right field line. He scored on a sac bunt by Dac Archer. With two outs in the inning Garrett Matheny was the last shot. He hit the ball right on the button, but it went right at the right fielder for the final out.

Connor Bagnieski tallied three of Radford's eight hits in a 3-for-3 game and Bryant had the Highlanders' only extra-base hit.
