Radford Splits with USC Upstate, Drops Weekend Series

RADFORD, Va.David Bryant hit his first two home runs of the season, but it wasn't enough as the Radford baseball team dropped the series to USC Upstate on Saturday at Carter Memorial Stadium. Radford took game one, 5-2, but fell in 10 innings to the Spartans, 5-4.

Game 1
Five runs gave Radford all the offense it needed in game one as stellar pitching from Greg Duncan through seven innings shut down the Spartan offense.

He only allowed one run on six hits with four strikeouts en route to his third win of the season. He gave way to Bruce Hudson and Alex Perkins who earned his fifth save of the season. Perkins didn't allow a hit in the effort.

Radford scored early runs as the first came off the bat of David Bryant with his first home run of the season. It came in the second inning and he later tacked on the fifth and final run for Radford in the fifth inning with an RBI single. He ended the day 3-for-3 with a single, home run and two RBIs.

Anthony Galati had the other three RBIs and it came in the fifth inning before Bryant's single. Galati hit the Highlander's only double down the left field line that cleared the bases and gave Radford a 4-0 lead until Bryant tacked on the final run.

The Spartans tried to muster a comeback with a run in the eighth and ninth but Perkins was able to close the door on just 12 pitches.

Game 2
The Highlanders opened with two quick runs in the first inning and Ryan Bywaters was dealing. He struck out four and didn't allow his first hit until the fourth inning. The Spartans took advantage of their first hit with two runs in the inning.

David Bryant gave Radford the lead once again with his second home run of the day and season. It was another solo shot to right field. The Spartans took their first lead, 4-3. in the sixth inning with solid base running on a failed pickoff attempt.

Bryant drove in his second run of the game and tied the game at four in the bottom of the sixth. He later came to the plate in the eighth inning with the go-ahead run on second, but was unable to plate him. The next batter flied out to right field on the first pitch.

Each pitcher got a three up, three down ninth inning and Alex Perkins struck out the side. The 10th inning saw a runner placed on second via the international tiebreaker rule. USC Upstate manufactured a run in the 10th and the Highlanders were unable to do as a called strike three ended the game.

Bryant tallied another multi-hit game with a 2-for-3 game and two RBIs. Connor Bagnieski and Garrett Matheny each went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

As a staff, the Highlanders tallied 13 strikeouts. Bywaters and Perkins had six each and Brock Smith added one. Perkins suffered the tough-luck loss and only allowed two hits through 3.2 innings of work.
